The goofy bokeh from the lens can be explained by this.

Take slices of the cone of light that is going towards the camera sensor, and you will get a ring like shown in the video of varying sizes (except when in focus when it will be a single point) That is basically one of the point sources (either red or blue) in the bottom image that NetMasterOC3 posted. He is only doing this on a star, basically a single point source of light. Just take a look at this video showing them going in and out of focus. The problems start when you get on either side of the focal plane. The obstruction only really lowers the amount of light there. The part of the image that is in focus is basically at a point on the image sensor. It took me a while to realize why the central obstruction doesnt mess things up with the *focused* part of the image. It doesn't really matter much to me since I can always adjust contrast in post processing. The central obstruction of the mirror lens cuts down on contrast a bit (There are always wars over contrast with the refractor telescopes vs mirror telescope crowds).but they are usually talking about visual observing. One advantage of the mirror lens is that you don't get the chromatic aberrations off axis as you do with non ED/L high end lenses.

In saying that, take a close look at the R10 as well as others have suggested, and the R7 if you can stretch the budget.īut if you're wanting full-frame 4k so you can shoot at 24mm with your existing lens, you'll need to substantially increase your budget for a higher end body, or to purchase a wider lens for use on one of the APS-C, or cropped-in FF options that have been suggested.Even pretty good SCT telescopes (basically larger versions of the lens) have problems with star shapes towards the corners. The R has a few other QOL features that make it nicer to shoot with, too (EVF, rear display, top LCD), and for stills work its full mechanical shutter can be useful in some situations, too-the RP doesn't offer a full mechanical mode due to omitting a mechanical first-curtain. Skip the suggested RP for video work and look at a used EOS R instead if you're gonna go that way-it's got a better sensor, offers Canon Log-1, and uses the same batteries as your 6D, if you're going to keep it as a backup.

Hey OP, how wide do you need your field of view to be when recording in 4k? Pretty much all the 4k options worth considering around your budget are either crop sensors or full-frame sensors but cropping in to achieve 4k resolution.
